4Great Sound...Very Expensive  Feb 12, 2010
I'll try to make this brief. My old TV was having some problems and forced a new purchase. A big beautiful 50" plasma Panasonic Viera! It had all the same connections as previous TV with one exception, no analog audio output. The Panasonic only supports TOSLINK. And the way I have my system setup, I run all component feeds directly to the TV and then route audio back to my Yamaha receiver.

Long story short, I was forced to switch over to the newer digital TOSLINK output style.

Keep in mind, I purchased my Panasonic from a local electronics dealer. I had friends coming over later that night, so I didn't have the luxury of ordering any cabling online. The only TOSLINK cables the dealer had around was this particular Monster cable. I nearly fainted when I was told it was $60. I knew it would be cheaper online, and it is. Amazon would have been about half what I paid. Either way, I needed it so I ponied up the extra dollars and went on my way.

Got home and got the new system setup. No sound. WTC!?! Then I realized these cables have little plastic nipple protectors on the end of the cables. Hint: Be sure to remove them before plugging them in. After removal, the sound was beautiful.

Overall, I am very, very happy with the sound quality. I am not sure if it has anything to do with Monster branded cabling or the fact I upgraded from analog to digital, but I am in pure audiophile heaven. I will never go back to analog again. I can even turn the system up and rock the house w/o getting that annoying hiss from the traditional analog connections.

If not for being so expensive I would have ranked 5 stars.

Consumer Reports Says: Buy HDTV at Amazon!

Washington, D.C. (July 2010) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)

The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2009 and June 2010. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its July 2010 issue.)

"
Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."

Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com came closest.
