It's A Sony -- Hard To Go Wrong Jul 22, 2010
The Sony STR-DH100 is another stereo receiver that should be on your short list of potential "buys".
Audio quality is good, and you certainly get plenty of line level inputs to choose from. This receiver does not lack output power. There is also a dedicated input for iPod music players (though this requires that you purchase a suitable docking unit from Sony). I felt that at higher volumes, the tone of this receiver sometimes took on a screechy quality that made it a little tiring to listen to. Adjusting the treble downwards fixed it. At low to moderate listening volumes, it sounded fine without changing the tone settings. The Sherwood RX-4109 to which I directly compared the STR-DH100 didn't have quite as much punch, but I found that I had a preference to the RX-4109's audio over that of this STR-DH100.
You do need a remote to perform many of the functions that this receiver supports. The basics are pretty well covered by the front panel, but a few things (such as audio balance adjustments) require that you have the remote control handy. The remote is jam-packed with buttons, which may preclude using it in low light.
Sherwood's build quality is better. The STR-DH100's internals are not very well secured--the unit I bought had been dropped and when it fell, the heatsink shifted and cracked the main circuit board badly. I patched it back together and it sprang to life immediately. There is nothing holding the heatsink to the casing of the unit as there is in the Sherwood receiver.
The tuner is passable. I didn't find it to be all that sensitive when used with a wall mounted dipole antenna. What it did receive, it received clearly. There was no middle ground--this receiver either picked up a station or it did not.
Where this receiver really shines is in its user interface. Sony clearly had a thoughtful team of engineers working on the firmware in the microcontroller that runs the display and front panel. It remembers the panel dimming settings and even lets you enter custom names for all of the audio inputs and radio stations that you listen to. This is a wonderful feature, especially if you use an input for a different purpose than Sony intended and want the receiver to display the "right" label for a given source. You can display numbers, letters and even some symbols in the display.
The tuner does not decode RDS information in radio broadcasts. It seems that no stereo receiver manufacturer builds this capability into models destined for the US market, which is unfortunate.
My only real complaint about this receiver is with its lack of a phono input. If you want to listen to turntable records, you can, but you will need a external preamplifier to do so.
Should you desire to do so, Sony does sell a service manual for this receiver. If you plan to have yours for a long time and try to repair it if it breaks, this is a nice bonus.

ALSO THERE IS NO MANUALLY SELECT BUTTON TO GO FROM ONE STATION TO ANOTHER - - IT SEEMS TO ONLY SCAN AND THEN LOCK ON TO A STATION IT PICKS UP!!

Well....screwed myself on this one.
Bought this and Sony speakers for our Bedroom remodel (which took two months longer than planned.
Just opened and installed this Sony Receiver and guess what.... DOA !!!
And I can't return it according to Amazon even though it was just opened............

After reading all the reviews, I expected this be a serious upgrade to my old 50-watt single channel Pioneer system, but I have mixed feelings about the Sony STR-DH100. The highs are far cleaner and clearer, it brings out the details in the sound (That's the only way I can describe it) but I was a little surprised that the bass isn't near as powerful or deep as the 50-watt system.
I have my TV, XBox 360, DVD player and computer hooked into the receiver and it took a lot of finagling with the audio levels on my computers sound card to get back the bass. I don't have that option for the DVD or Xbox and the STR-DH100 doesn't have enough adjustment on it's own to achieve the same bass depth *and* quality... The only available adjustments are bass and treble.
I've paired it with the Sony SSF-7000 Floor-Standing 4-way Speaker with 8" Woofer (Pair) and initially thought they might be at fault, but after testing them with another receiver it was clear they weren't the problem. The remote control has a lot of functions for controlling the TV and DVD, but they are wasted unless you have the Sony brand components they work for.
I'm pleased overall though and with the audio source levels sorted out it delivers some really awesome sound.

not a bad starter receiver for an individual who is beginning to understand his needs in the home audio department. Unfortunately i believe I'm going to have to upgrade soon. The onkyo seems more powerful and more complete for an individual who requires more service out of their entertainment center. Even though Onkyo is $40 more, spend it now and prevent an upgrade of $240. 2 channel means it can only run 2 items at one time. Unless I want to be bothered by having different hook ups that need to be changed constantly, I need a 4 channel receiver. Do Not misunderstand me, This is a great receiver if your an individual who only needs a small unit. It's powerful if you have good speakers.

Consumer Reports Says: Buy HDTV at Amazon!
Washington, D.C. (July 2010) -- When it comes to price, Consumer Reports says shoppers are most likely to find the best deals online. And the publication called three ecommerce sites "standouts" in this year's Consumer Reports ratings of electronics stores: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com and B&H (bhphotovideo.com)
The magazine's survey was based on more than 38,000 purchases of electronics, including flat-screen TVs, between January 2009 and June 2010. The report indicated that online stores consistently offered better prices. (The magazine's full report can be found in its July 2010 issue.)
"Buying online can be better," the magazine said in a press release. "The higher-rated electronics retailers in Consumer Reports annual reader survey are Web sites. Readers who bought online rated their overall satisfaction at 90 out of 100 -- higher than those who bought in a store. Additionally, many Web merchants offer free shipping, even on TVs, which could spare the hassle of struggling to fit a bulky carton in the car or paying a local store for delivery."
Consumer Reports said that while no single retailer scored excellent in all shopping categories, Amazon.com came closest.
